Carlissa Montoya, the visionary behind CM Closet Design in San Antonio, Texas, has built a career where creativity and functionality intersect. With over 30 years of experience in visual merchandising, leadership, and design, she has established herself as a respected expert and mentor in the custom storage industry.
From Retail to Closet Design
Carlissa’s journey into closet design was a natural evolution. Following the closure of her Lilly Pulitzer retail store, she shifted her focus to wardrobe education, maintenance, and organization through her signature “Purge, Merge, Splurge” method. As demand for full-scale closet transformations grew, she found her passion in designing custom storage solutions. Her expertise deepened while designing for California Closets, an industry pioneer, where she honed her skills in both function and aesthetics.
Her dedication to professional growth has led her to serve on the Board of Directors for ASID and the Association of Closet and Storage Professionals. She is also an active member of the Closet Institute of America, the Greater San Antonio Builders Association, and Professional Women in Building. Most recently, she founded Closet Darling Collective, a community dedicated to supporting women in the closet and storage industry.

Carlissa’s success is deeply rooted in the relationships she has cultivated throughout her career. Inspired by a strong network of vendors, peers, and industry professionals, she took the leap into entrepreneurship. In addition to CM Closet Design, she and her husband co-own TORO Garage Co., specializing in high-quality garage storage solutions, including garage-grade cabinets, organizers, and concrete coatings..
Beyond the Studio: A Life Filled with Passion
Outside of design, Carlissa enjoys immersing herself in San Antonio’s vibrant music, art, and culinary scene with her husband. She has a deep appreciation for eclectic fashion and vintage home décor, reflecting her love for timeless style. Her Mexican heritage is a cornerstone of her identity, influencing both her creativity and personal life.
